How To Care For Curly Hair

Curly hair requires some special considerations when it comes to care. Curly hair tends to be drier and more prone to tangles than straight hair, so you’ll have to be careful about washing, conditioning, and styling your hair.Today’s blog post is for all you curly-haired beauties out there, who are looking for the best tips on how to care for their curls.

  1. Washing Curly Hair

– Don’t overdo it. Generally, curly hair is prone to being dry, which is the reason why it’s so important not to over-wash it. Excessive shampooing opens up the cuticles and strips the hairs of their natural oils, which will dry out your curls even more. The less you wash, the better! Say, 1-2 times a week.

– Cleanse the scalp. That being said, shampooing curly hair is still necessary for healthy hair growth, as it gets rid of all the buildup from oils, dirt, and dust. When shampooing, concentrate on rubbing and cleansing your scalp properly with your fingertips.

– Know your ingredients. The key is to use products specifically made for curly hair, which are also sulfate and alcohol free. Alcohol/sulfites are the harshest of detergents and surfactants, they are extremely drying to the hair, and should be avoided.

  1. Moisturizing

Curly hair tends to be drier than many other types for a very simple, structural reason—because of its twisty shape, it takes longer for oil from the scalp to make its way along the length of the hair strand.  Therefore, curly hair needs lots of moisture—more than most other types of hair!

Spritz then seal your dry hair with water and conditioner:  It stands to reason that water would be good for dry hair…and it is!  So try this: fill a spray bottle with two-thirds water and one third moisturizing spray-on conditioner.  Mist your hair until its damp but not dripping.  Then seal in the first layer of moisture with a rich conditioning cream or oil. If you like using a styling or blow-out cream before blow drying, layer it over a leave-in moisturizing formula for double protection and an extra shot of moisture for your dry hair. Take time for a weekly hot oil treatment:  It’s easy and relaxing!  Simply apply a luxurious treatment oil formula–with ingredients like gardenia, coconut or Tahitian Manoi oil–to your dry hair, and comb through with a wide tooth comb.  Cover your hair with a plastic cap and sit in the sun, under a dryer or in a warm room for 20-30 minutes.  Relax!  Then rinse, shampoo and condition with a rich conditioner.

  1. A few more thing

Curly hair has one Great Commandment: Never brush curly hair.

This wrecks your curl pattern by breaking up the hair strands that are forming curls.Further, because your curls resist the brush, brushing can yank your hair out at the root or break it into split ends or probably both. Remember, you are more likely to damage the hair shaft because it is not protected at all!

Only comb your hair with a wide tooth comb before your shower, or gently finger comb after the shower. Remember that wet hair is more prone to breakage, so be super patient and gentle if you’re combing it wet.

Avoid hairsprays and mousse: Not only can it make your curls crunchy, these two products are also ones that contain the highest amount of alcohol.

Go easy on the heat: Excess heat can cause your curls lose their natural spiral-like shape, making them look lifeless. If you notice this, avoid using any kind of heat for a week or two. If you do use hot styling tools, use them on moderate heat setting and always use heat protectant.

Blonde Hair Care: How to Maintain the Perfect Blonde Shade

They say blondes have more fun, but let’s be real here – caring for blonde hair can be a real hassle. Highlighted or coloured blonde hair can need a lot more protection than natural blonde hair due to the presence of bleach. In Summer, this need heightens as the sun, chlorine and salt, can damage the colour and break down its vibrancy and shine. It is therefore important that during the warmer months, you take the necessary protection to keep your hair from becoming damaged. Even if your hair is naturally blonde, make sure you keep it safe in the sun!

1

We have put together our top 3 tips to help keep your blonde hair the healthiest and most radiant it can be.

  1. Choosing a shampoo and conditioner

As many have learned in school, the shade purple is directly opposite of the shade yellow on the color wheel. This means that when the purple pigments within the shampoo are absorbed by your hair follicle, it then covers and cancels out any warm yellow tones within your hair.

To keep your blonde tress sparkling, we recommend washing your hair with purple shampoo at least once a week, and alternating shampoos throughout the week. If you find that your hair is super brassy, or becomes yellow fairly quickly, try increasing your usage. If you find that your hair is becoming too ashy, try decreasing how frequent you use this shampoo. You can also adjust how much you tone your hair by how long you leave your shampoo in for.

Keep in mind, purple shampoos are not really designed for cleaning your hair, so feel free to follow up with a cleansing shampoo if you find that your hair gets oily quickly.

  1. Keep your hair moisturised.

The presence of bleach in highlighted or coloured blonde hair can leave it dry and damaged. Even natural locks need essential care and protection to keep them looking radiant. To help bring dry brittle hair back to life, we recommend investing in a treatment mask once a week to ensure your hair is well moisturised.

Deep treatments/hair masks are a great way to restore the moisture stripped from your hair during the coloring process. Although you cannot undo the damage done in one step (wouldn’t that be great though?!) deep conditioning treatments are vital for colour treated hair, and are a great way to help prevent breakage.

3.    Protect it!

Protect it from the heat

That’s right, back away from the blow dryer! The less heat styling, the better! As you now know, lifting your hair color to achieve a lighter blonde shade requires for your hair cuticle to be stripped. Once the cuticle has been stripped, it makes it difficult for your hair to hold onto the nutrients your scalp produces; leaving your hair dry and brittle. Adding an excessive amount of heat styling to your hair, on top of the chemical process, can really damage and dull your shine.

If you are addicted to heat, invest in a leave-in conditioning spray to keep your hair hydrated,It adds a lightweight wavy texture to your hair without damaging the colour and causing dryness.

5

Keep it out of the sun

We know this sounds unfortunate – I mean who doesn’t love some sun! Sadly, overexposure to the sun is not only damaging for your skin, but also for your blonde hair. Harmful UV rays can dry out your locks, and turn your beautiful blonde shade a brassy shade of orange. If you are planning a fun day in the sun, we recommend bringing a cute hat along to protect your hair, and your skin, from the sun. If hats aren’t your thing, then opt for a UV/heat protectant.
