5 Things that damage hair extensions

Fresh out the pack, human hair extensions are soft, flexible, beautiful. The strands slip between your fingers like silk, reflecting light with a shine and sheen that just begs to be showed off. But some factors like your environment and care choices can make your gorgeous perfect locks fall short of their initial beauty. So how do you know what’s ruining your cuticles, and what do you do? Read on! What follows is a guide to your human hair extensions’ top five mortal enemies and what you can do to combat them.

1: Air Pollution

Nothing smothers your hair faster than smog, car exhaust, and even cigarette smoke. Smoky air contains particles that coat the strands of your hair pieces and dull both the color and shine of the hair. Worse, in different kinds of smoke and fumes, these particles are mostly bits of dangerous and drying substances like tar, ash, coal, and acids.

Your best bet is to stop smoking if you haven’t yet, and to rinse or wash your hair extensions a bit more often – up to three times a week – if you live in a highly polluted area. Better yet, rotate the hair you use each time you get a new install; this way, you don’t have to over-wash any particular set of hair, and it will all look better.

2: Under-Washing

Trying to keep your new hairstyle intact as long as possible only makes sense. But leaving a hairstyle as-is for too long and not washing your locks is a huge mistake! Dirty hair looks and smells bad, as products, dirt, and everything else that touches your hair builds up, leading to dull, lifeless strands that are more prone to breakage. Yes, dirty hair is more fragile than clean hair, and this is especially true of hair extensions. Water always has been and always will be hair’s best natural moisturizer, and dirt simply blocks moisture from reaching the cuticle. So try to wash or rinse your locks at least once a week. They’ll thank you with super movement and shine.

3: Harsh, Drying Products

You’ve read it here a million times before, but shampoos, conditioners, sprays, and gels heavy on alcohol, mineral oil, sulfates, and phosphates simply strip the natural oils and moisture from hair. The problem gets even worse when it comes to your Vietnam virgin hair extensions, as these virgin locks have never been subjected to any chemical treatments and are not meant to be “roughed up” in this way. Overly-harsh chemicals can destroy the cuticle of your Vietnamese hair, leaving it no stronger or more beautiful than the average chain-store hair extensions. Try gentle, sulfate- and phosphate-free cleansers like diluted castile soap or a baking-soda solution, and check product labels for safe-yet-effective ingredients.

4: Improper Handling

The major advantage of buying Vietnam remy hair extensions is the smooth, uninterrupted, unidirectional cuticle that gives you such a glossy, frizz-free profile. But improper handling – using the wrong tools and techniques to style and care for your hair extensions – snatches and tears at this perfect cuticle, pulling the layers apart and ruining your virgin weave. Make sure that you always use a gentle touch, as well as combs and brushes with appropriately wide teeth, and try to leave the heat styling to pros with tools that heat to just the right temperature. Also only use bobby pins when absolutely necessary, and never use hair pins that have lost their rubber tips (these poke through and break hair faster than scissors!).

5: Mold

Fully and properly drying your human hair extensions is of the utmost importance. Many women think they can simply wash-and-go or wash-and-store their hair pieces and wigs, but you have to make sure the strands have adequately dried before anything else. Hair extensions that are stored while still wet are almost certain to sprout bacteria and other harmful organisms, and even on your head, interior sections of hair can dry improperly at the root or weft.

To combat this, always make sure to fully dry all your hair extensions by separating each track or fusion section and blow- or air-drying. Separating the strands allows air to circulate to every piece of hair and dry it, preventing mold damage. Double check wefts, especially machine-sewn ones, by pressing them against your thumb or forefinger. If there is even a hint of wetness on that finger, keep on drying until there isn’t.

The good news, of course, is that human hair extensions have already finished growing, so factors like nutrition, hydrating your body, and overall health have nothing to do with keeping them soft and lovely. So you should be fine if you can manage to keep your hair pieces away from these five bad guys!

5 ways to get gleaming hair this summer

Sun rays in the summer are so strong that they can damage your hair by causing thinning or colour-fading. Because you sweat more in the summer, your scalp also turns oily making it more susceptible to dandruff which can cause serious damage to your hair. It is important for you to know how to protect your hair this summer. Here are six ways you can protect your hair against the sun.

protect-your-hair-this summer

  1. Keep hair moist

Contrary to popular belief, moisturiser makes for healthy hair. The question is how can you keep your hair moisturised? One of the easiest ways to do so is to keep a hair spray. Fill the bottle with clean water, ensuring that it’s not salty or chlorinated as that could lead to dryness. When it’s unbearably hot, spray your hair and scalp with water. When at home, spray twice to prevent your hair from becoming dry. You can also use a moisturiser-rich shampoo and conditioner this summer to give your hair a soft and shiny look.

  1. Apply natural remedies to your hair.

There are a lot of different hair products you can buy to improve the quality of your hair, but some of the best things for your hair can be found in the kitchen: Olive oil: warm olive oil will help moisturize dry hair. Apply to your hair and let sit for 45 minutes, then shampoo and rinse. Tea: unsweetened, brewed tea can bring shine to your hair as well as enhance your natural color. Rinse hair with a tea that corresponds to your natural color (black tea for brunettes, chamomile tea for blondes hair) after rinsing out shampoo in a shower. Coconut oil: this serves as a natural conditioner. Take heated coconut oil and apply to hair, letting it sit for thirty minutes. Then rinse with shampoo. Honey: honey is a natural moisturizer and can help strengthen hair follicles. Mix equal parts honey and shampoo and rinse.

  1. Protect your hair from the sun.

Surprisingly, sun can damage your hair just like it damages your skin. Too much sun can dry out your hair, especially if your hair is color treated, so whenever you are outside for long periods of time try covering your hair with a hat or use a hairspray with protection.

  1. Protect your hair when swimming

Who doesn’t want to take a dip in the sweltering heat? Protecting your hair when and after swimming is important. Make sure you don’t shampoo your hair before going to swim as it can rob your hair off all the proteins. Before you swim, apply some conditioner on your hair. This will reduce the amount of chlorine and salt that your hair can absorb from the pool water. You should shampoo your hair right after swimming, as that will remove any active chlorine that may be left on your hair.

  1. Drink water

One of the best ways to make your hair look healthy is by drinking plenty of water. Drinking adequate water will help your hair grow, keeping it hydrated.

Curly hair doesn’t take as much effort to do each day as other hair types. There’s no blow drying, flat ironing, or “styling” that is needed to look good. A beautiful, healthy head of curls is naturally full of body and life all its own. Maybe a little touch of coconut or grapeseed oil, and you’re ready to go!

How To Make Your Curls Last Longer

If you have curly hair, or want curly hair, it can be incredibly frustrating. Curls can be quick to loosen, “fall out” and droop. They can easily appear frizzy or static if you are unlucky. However, these problems can be quite easy to eliminate.

Today we’re sharing our favourite tips and tricks with you on how to curl your hair to make it last all day! By the way, all these tips also work for hair extensions as well.

1. Get Your Curls To Stay: Cool Them Down

One of the most effective tricks on how to get your curls to stay is to let the curl cool down and set before letting it go. Split your hair into fairly equal sections and run the curling iron from the base to the tip. After each curl, pin the curl to your head with a hairpin. How does this work? Well, as you wrap your hair around the curling iron, heat is transferred onto the hair strands, which is what makes them change their shape. So once your pinned curl is cooled down, it will allow the cuticle to close and set in place, making the curl last for a much longer period of time. Let the hairspray sit in your hair for around 10-15 minutes.

2. Use the right hair products

Help your curls! Apply styling products to your hair, which will help hold the curls in longer. Depending what works with your hair, apply a tiny bit of mousse prior to drying your hair, or simply spray hairspray before and after curling. All this is after applying heat protectant, of course – always remember the heat protectant first!

  1. Using Rollers

Wash your hair then let it dry so that it is damp. It is best to put in the curlers when your hair is damp so that the curls last longer. Additionally, the hair will be easier to work with if it is damp. Comb your hair to remove any knots. Combing your hair can help straighten it out so that the rollers will be more effective.

Apply a curling enhancer before putting in the rollers. It is best to use a spray as a cream can leave white flakes behind in your hair. Let the spray sit in your damp, combed hair for around 3-5 minutes before putting in the rollers.

Put in the rollers. Divide your hair into equal 1-inch wide sections. Roll each of these sections into the roller so that your hair looks uniformly curly after the rollers are removed. Apply a few more sprays of hairspray after you have applied the curlers.

Do not use much more than three sprays since too much hairspray can be damaging to your hair and the environment. Remove the rollers in the morning to finish the process of curling your hair.

  1. Invest in good hot hair tools

For years, you may think that your hair is ‘stick straight’ and that ‘your curls will fall apart in 20 minutes anyway’. You will think that as long as you use cheap, drugstore brand curlers. Only when you switch to better quality, higher-end tools, will you realize that the problem isn’t in your hair – it’s in the iron! Yes, they may be more expensive, however, they damage your hair less, they heat up better (so you will apply heat for a shorter period of time), and good quality irons will last you a very long time.

What is your secret to fabulous curls that last longer? Please share with us, We would love to hear your suggestions.

How To Care For Curly Hair

Curly hair requires some special considerations when it comes to care. Curly hair tends to be drier and more prone to tangles than straight hair, so you’ll have to be careful about washing, conditioning, and styling your hair.Today’s blog post is for all you curly-haired beauties out there, who are looking for the best tips on how to care for their curls.

  1. Washing Curly Hair

– Don’t overdo it. Generally, curly hair is prone to being dry, which is the reason why it’s so important not to over-wash it. Excessive shampooing opens up the cuticles and strips the hairs of their natural oils, which will dry out your curls even more. The less you wash, the better! Say, 1-2 times a week.

– Cleanse the scalp. That being said, shampooing curly hair is still necessary for healthy hair growth, as it gets rid of all the buildup from oils, dirt, and dust. When shampooing, concentrate on rubbing and cleansing your scalp properly with your fingertips.

– Know your ingredients. The key is to use products specifically made for curly hair, which are also sulfate and alcohol free. Alcohol/sulfites are the harshest of detergents and surfactants, they are extremely drying to the hair, and should be avoided.

  1. Moisturizing

Curly hair tends to be drier than many other types for a very simple, structural reason—because of its twisty shape, it takes longer for oil from the scalp to make its way along the length of the hair strand.  Therefore, curly hair needs lots of moisture—more than most other types of hair!

Spritz then seal your dry hair with water and conditioner:  It stands to reason that water would be good for dry hair…and it is!  So try this: fill a spray bottle with two-thirds water and one third moisturizing spray-on conditioner.  Mist your hair until its damp but not dripping.  Then seal in the first layer of moisture with a rich conditioning cream or oil. If you like using a styling or blow-out cream before blow drying, layer it over a leave-in moisturizing formula for double protection and an extra shot of moisture for your dry hair. Take time for a weekly hot oil treatment:  It’s easy and relaxing!  Simply apply a luxurious treatment oil formula–with ingredients like gardenia, coconut or Tahitian Manoi oil–to your dry hair, and comb through with a wide tooth comb.  Cover your hair with a plastic cap and sit in the sun, under a dryer or in a warm room for 20-30 minutes.  Relax!  Then rinse, shampoo and condition with a rich conditioner.

  1. A few more thing

Curly hair has one Great Commandment: Never brush curly hair.

This wrecks your curl pattern by breaking up the hair strands that are forming curls.Further, because your curls resist the brush, brushing can yank your hair out at the root or break it into split ends or probably both. Remember, you are more likely to damage the hair shaft because it is not protected at all!

Only comb your hair with a wide tooth comb before your shower, or gently finger comb after the shower. Remember that wet hair is more prone to breakage, so be super patient and gentle if you’re combing it wet.

Avoid hairsprays and mousse: Not only can it make your curls crunchy, these two products are also ones that contain the highest amount of alcohol.

Go easy on the heat: Excess heat can cause your curls lose their natural spiral-like shape, making them look lifeless. If you notice this, avoid using any kind of heat for a week or two. If you do use hot styling tools, use them on moderate heat setting and always use heat protectant.

What are your tips on caring for your curls? Any special tips or tricks? We would love to hear your suggestions.

Blonde Hair Care: How to Maintain the Perfect Blonde Shade

They say blondes have more fun, but let’s be real here – caring for blonde hair can be a real hassle. Highlighted or coloured blonde hair can need a lot more protection than natural blonde hair due to the presence of bleach. In Summer, this need heightens as the sun, chlorine and salt, can damage the colour and break down its vibrancy and shine. It is therefore important that during the warmer months, you take the necessary protection to keep your hair from becoming damaged. Even if your hair is naturally blonde, make sure you keep it safe in the sun!

We have put together our top 3 tips to help keep your blonde hair the healthiest and most radiant it can be.

  1. Choosing a shampoo and conditioner

As many have learned in school, the shade purple is directly opposite of the shade yellow on the color wheel. This means that when the purple pigments within the shampoo are absorbed by your hair follicle, it then covers and cancels out any warm yellow tones within your hair.

To keep your blonde tress sparkling, we recommend washing your hair with purple shampoo at least once a week, and alternating shampoos throughout the week. If you find that your hair is super brassy, or becomes yellow fairly quickly, try increasing your usage. If you find that your hair is becoming too ashy, try decreasing how frequent you use this shampoo. You can also adjust how much you tone your hair by how long you leave your shampoo in for.

Keep in mind, purple shampoos are not really designed for cleaning your hair, so feel free to follow up with a cleansing shampoo if you find that your hair gets oily quickly.

  1. Keep your hair moisturised.

The presence of bleach in highlighted or coloured blonde hair can leave it dry and damaged. Even natural locks need essential care and protection to keep them looking radiant. To help bring dry brittle hair back to life, we recommend investing in a treatment mask once a week to ensure your hair is well moisturised.

Deep treatments/hair masks are a great way to restore the moisture stripped from your hair during the coloring process. Although you cannot undo the damage done in one step (wouldn’t that be great though?!) deep conditioning treatments are vital for colour treated hair, and are a great way to help prevent breakage.

3.    Protect it!

Protect it from the heat

That’s right, back away from the blow dryer! The less heat styling, the better! As you now know, lifting your hair color to achieve a lighter blonde shade requires for your hair cuticle to be stripped. Once the cuticle has been stripped, it makes it difficult for your hair to hold onto the nutrients your scalp produces; leaving your hair dry and brittle. Adding an excessive amount of heat styling to your hair, on top of the chemical process, can really damage and dull your shine.

If you are addicted to heat, invest in a leave-in conditioning spray to keep your hair hydrated,It adds a lightweight wavy texture to your hair without damaging the colour and causing dryness.

Keep it out of the sun

We know this sounds unfortunate – I mean who doesn’t love some sun! Sadly, overexposure to the sun is not only damaging for your skin, but also for your blonde hair. Harmful UV rays can dry out your locks, and turn your beautiful blonde shade a brassy shade of orange. If you are planning a fun day in the sun, we recommend bringing a cute hat along to protect your hair, and your skin, from the sun. If hats aren’t your thing, then opt for a UV/heat protectant.

There you have it! These three tips will help restore that lustre to your locks, and keep your hair looking refresh and healthy! What are some tips or tricks you have on maintaining your hair color? Comment below to let us know, we would love to hear from you!
